Sally Grant
My textile practice straddles two paths: a hands-on, process-led approach which intends to be worn on the body; then a more illustrative form which depicts the body in space. I believe these two parallel concerns are possible because of the training that I received in the art and design education system. Most of the images and themes in my work come from a combination of memory and imagination, things which are buried until my work brings them to life. This "excavation" process fascinates and mystifies me in equal measure.
My work is in printed textiles (and recently, stitch) and focuses on the position of the body and its parameters. I am currently working on a series of garments which explore the theme of protection, something which is central to the position of textiles in a contemporary context.
