Susan Smith
My museum background and interest in historical textiles is invariably evident in my work, which incorporates stitch with a range of other textile techniques and media, both traditional and contemporary.
Certain motifs recur time and again, particularly symbols of remembrance and affection, such as the heart or of natural forms, equally symbolic, such as the spiral. My preferred working materials are natural fabrics and fibres combined with hand made paper and found objects.
Recent additions to my repertoire are ranges of laminated paper jewellery, each one an individual work of art, and of heart-shaped, beaded pin cushions. Such decorative pin cushions were traditionally presented to loved ones or to new mothers and mine are designed as gifts to commemorate births, weddings or other special occasions. Each one is unique, incorporating exotic or vintage fabrics.
I am a member of The Makers Guild in Wales and examples of my work are always on display at Craft in the Bay in Cardiff.
